Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Did you know our playground is open in the holidays?

We are excited to participate in the Share Our Space program when it returns these autumn school holidays. Participating public schools across regional and metro areas of the state will continue to open their playgrounds, ovals and sports courts for the whole community to enjoy.

You and your children can play in public schools all over NSW. Schools from Lord Howe Island Central School 600km off the east coast of mainland Australia all the way to Palinyewah Public School in the far west will share their outdoor facilities as part of the program.

Participating schools are open 7 days a week between 8am-6pm from 13 to 26 April 2019, including weekends and public holidays.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Mandatory Uniform for 2019

School Uniform Policy

The School Uniform policy has been developed in accordance with the Department of Education School Uniform Policy.

The School Uniform Policy was developed after consultation between students, parents and staff. This policy is strongly endorsed by the North Nowra Public School P&C Association.

The North Nowra Public School P&C Association voted on and changed the school uniform at a Special General Meeting on Tuesday 15th September 2015 (An amendment to the policy was passed at a meeting of the P & C Association on 16 August 2016 regarding wearing of Representative Sport Jumpers). The North Nowra Public School Principal has accepted the recommendation. The new school uniform (as of 15/09/15) will be mandatory as of Term 1, 2019.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Outdoor Cinema - Movie Night

Our school playground surrounded by bushland and tucked away in beautiful North Nowra will soon be coming alive with excitement and entertainment. The North Nowra Public School P&C is busy planning our 4th annual Outdoor Cinema. A night of fun to celebrate our community and the School’s 20th Anniversary as well as raise funds for our school.

We’re holding our outdoor cinema evening on Friday 9th November 2018 and would love for you to be involved. Raffles, lucky door prizes, dancers, singers, jumping castle/rides for the kids, loads of food and fun and much more!

Gates will open at 4.00pm, with our screening of 'Coco’ starting at approximately 15mins after dusk. Entry via the front gate. Hope to see you there.

It's spring, but can still be cold! Don't forget to rug up, bring something comfortable to sit on and cash for yummy food, treats, games and rides!

We are small enough to provide individual support when needed and large enough to offer a variety of opportunities.

We have a lovely school environment with lots of undercover areas to play when it is hot or wet.

We have shady trees, a large oval, modern play equipment, and grassy areas to chill under and play on.

Is your child old enough to start kindergarten?

Your child can start Kindergarten at the beginning of 2019 (Friday 1st February) if they turn five on or before 31 July 2018. By law, all children must be enrolled in school by their sixth birthday.

For your appointment, you will need to bring these documents with you:

your child's birth certificate or identity documents
proof of student's address – originals of different documents such as your council rates notice or residential lease and electricity bill
Immunisation history statement based on the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR)
family law or other relevant court orders (if applicable).

If your child is not a permanent resident you will also need to provide:

passport or travel documents
current visa and previous visas (if applicable).

It's important that you tell the Principal if your child has any special circumstances, allergies, health or medical conditions before your child starts school.

After your appointment with us, you may be asked to complete an application to enrol in a NSW Public School form and return it to us.

Reconciliation Week 2018: Don't keep history a mystery

Reconciliation Week

The theme for Reconciliation Week 2018 was ‘Don't keep history a mystery'. To further their understanding of Indigenous Australia, some students delved into the history in their classrooms. Reconciliation aims to build stronger race relations, to fortify unity, to achieve historical acceptance, to ensure there is institutional integrity and to make available equality and equity to all Indigenous peoples.

Reconciliation activities were abuzz in each of the classrooms last week. Students did research activities, art projects, and senior students listened to the government Apology made by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2008 to Indigenous Australians. To wrap the week up each student painted a stone to contribute to the Reconciliation circle. Aunty Pat Lester chose a Lilly Pilly plant to place inside the circle. The students watched on as Eric and Nicole, and Mr Peters completed the planting. Mrs George did a very special job at organising everything and the circle is a treasured addition to our school.

Manildra supports NNPS Breakfast Club

The North Nowra Public School Breakfast Club could not run without community support and also the volunteers who help out each and every week. In 2017 the Breakfast Club was able to provide breakfast to children each and every day. The children who come to breakfast club vary each day and if not for it being there they may have missed out otherwise.

Skipping breakfast can set you up for overeating later in the day. A healthy a.m. meal, on the other hand, can give you energy, satisfy your appetite, and set the stage for smart decisions all day long. As a place of learning, we want to make sure that children have the best opportunity to focus and achieve their optimum.

The $5000.00 donation in 2017 from The Manildra Group assisted in employing staff and purchasing food and equipment.

NNPS raise $265- for Tathra Bushfire Appeal

'Kids support kids, Staff support staff, Communities support communities and Principals support Principals'. - School Aid

Mr Wright-Smith and other Principals in the Shoalhaven have made efforts to raise funds for the Tathra Bushfire Appeal. At NNPS we held a Mufti Day at the Easter Hat Parade with a gold coin donation for the appeal.

The school raised $296.00 to send off to the Tathra Bushfire Appeal and we are ever so thankful to the school community for helping out the Tathra community in their time of need.

North Nowra Staff raise over $1000.00 for Relay for Life

In our first year as a Relay for Life team, North Nowra Public School raised $1096.00. The annual event held at the Nowra Showground was an overall success for event organisers. Our team was organised by Mrs Viney, who was also our team captain. With her efforts we raised money for the Cancer Council and also had a really fun time walking together as a team. The team are hopeful we will do it again and we are already talking about ways in which we may raise money for 2019.

Return & Earn - NNPS joins as a charity for you to donate to!

Return & Earn - NNPS is now a charity in this program!

The P&C have organised North Nowra Public School as a charitable organisation in the Return & Earn program. What this means is when you return your recyclables, you can select NNPS to donate the money to instead of keeping it for yourself. There are 3 return depots in Nowra and more in surrounding areas.

The P&C purchases equipment and resources for our school that provide greater opportunities for your child/ren for excellence in learning. You donating the money from recyclables from the program would support those efforts. The children at our school will also be returning their recyclables to the school canteen and will be rewarded with a 'kooka' for positive behaviour.

The bike track is OPEN EVERY day!

Bike Riding - IS EVERY DAY!

This term the bike track will be open during each break, each day. Students who have checked their brakes and chain are in good working order and their helmet is adjusted to fit, are invited to bring their bikes to school each day. Please walk your bike on school grounds at all other times. Years 3 to 6 may ride their bikes to school independently. K – 2 students are encouraged to ride with an adult or bring their bike in a car. Bikes are to be chained up in the bike storage area outside the Support Unit.

Any students observed riding (scootering) their bikes in the school will miss the opportunity to use the bike track for the next riding session. They may also be directed not to bring their bike to school for a period of time. Please walk your bike from the school gate to the bike rack or bike track.

We congratulate and welcome Mr Peter Wright-Smith as our new Principal.

The North Nowra Public School Selection Committee chose Mr Wright-Smith from a very talented group of applicants.

Many in our community already know Mr Wright-Smith as he has been Relieving Principal during 2017. He has been a valued member of our school since 2010, during which time he has developed many strong relationships with the community. He has worked closely with the P&C and staff to ensure that student outcomes are at the forefront of any decision the school makes.

Mr Wright-Smith says:

I am very humbled by the responsibility that the community has placed upon me. I look forward to leading the fantastic and talented Teaching and Learning Team at North Nowra Public School.

As the 20th year of North Nowra Public School commences, I am committed to a vision that will 'value individual excellence and equip future- focused learners'.

I will be working with the North Nowra Teaching and Learning team to achieve three primary Strategic Directions over the next three years;

Our school is committed to helping each student to be their best self and to have a sense of wellbeing.

There are times when every one of us, adult or child, needs someone to talk with. Someone they can trust - to be listened to in a kind and compassionate way. Someone who can offer guidance and encouragement - to help us understand what we can do to deal with the challenge/s or problem/s we face.

Cathy Baker has joined us as a Wellbeing Officer - Her role is to support and encourage students who are facing challenges in their lives. For example - sadness, anxiety, family changes/disruptions, anger, confusion, friendship issues and many other daily challenges which affect many of our children today's ever-changing, busy and complex world.

Cathy is here Mondays and Wednesdays. She is located in The Kidsmatter Space.

Cathy is at school Monday & Wednesday.

Students can "drop in" to see Cathy at The Kidsmatter Space during recess times.
During class time Cathy sees students by appointment. She will pick the student up from the classroom and walk with them back to the classroom afterwards.
Parents and Carers can make an appointment to talk with Cathy by phoning the school office on 4422 7045.

PBL School Reward -Technology Day

On Thursday 11 August, students may bring an electronic device to school unless advised otherwise by class teachers. Classes will spend up to one hour using these devices as a reward for being responsible, respectful and safe learners. This reward was selected by the SRC.

Please be aware that while every effort will be made to ensure that devices are not damaged nor lost, the school cannot be held responsible. Parents/ carers should consider this before allowing students to bring devices from home. Students who do not bring a device will still participate in this reward.

Congratulations to students from Years 5 and 6 for the projects that you presented at our Science Fair today. Working and thinking scientifically is important and you have done it well. Your written reports were thorough and some of you also learnt that experiments don't always go the way you want them to and that is the reason for further experimentation and further hypothesising. A great job that was well-supported by Ms Collin and your class teachers. The North Nowra School community has received a grant from the Teachers Mutual Bank. This grant will be used to build a chook pen and install a garden shed. Hence, our students will be able to grow produce, look after chickens, compost, use tank water and get a better understanding of this sustainable process. From 12^th May, 2015, applications for school travel passes will need to be completed online instead of using paper forms.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a school travel pass, students may need to live a minimum distance from their school.

Years K-2 (infants) – No minimum distatnce

Years 3 – 6 (primary) – 1.6 km straight line distance or 2.3 km walking distance.

Who needs to apply?

Most students who already have a school travel pass in 2016 won't need to re-apply for next year. However, you will need to update student details online if the student:

Is moving from Year 2 to Year 3
Is moving from Year 6 to Year 7

Every Girl

Through a successful NSW Club Grant application, North Nowra Public School will be providing the Every Girl Program to students in 2014. This program was developed by YWCA Australia and will be facilitated by a YWCA NSW Youth Worker and also the school Student Welfare Worker.

The program is targeted at girls aged 9-14years to achieve positive change and the development of strong self-esteem.

Using a strengths based approach and a human rights framework, this cutting edge program guides girls to create new areas of resilience, and to help them find their voice through civic and community engagement.

Breakfast Club

A Breakfast Club is operating 5 mornings per week thanks to the support from local businesses and volunteers. The North Nowra Public School community would like to thank the Manildra Group, P & R's North Nowra Bakehouse and Berry Rural Co-Op Society Ltd. Thank you also to the parent volunteers and the volunteers from Nowra City Church for enabling this Breakfast Club program to continue. Our student welfare worker is also assisting on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Of course, thank you to other staff who are also supporting the children through this Breakfast Club and particularly Mrs Payne and Mrs Thornton.

Citizenship Ceremony

The students and staff of North Nowra Public School were very privileged to witness the Citizenship and naturalisation ceremony for one of our staff members and parents, Mrs Esther Haughton.

The ceremony commenced with our Koori students performing a welcome dance and Ms Ardler spoke about the meaning of citizenship and what that meant to Aboriginal people as the Indigenous people of this country.

The Mayor of the City of Shoalhaven, Ms Joanna Gash, presided over the ceremony as Mrs Haughton gave her pledge.

The students of North Nowra Public School demonstrated their respect throughout this special assembly and Mrs Haughton thanked them for their involvement in this very significant event in her life.

Our orientation days will be 22 and 29 October and 5 November from 9:20- 10:40 am. Enrolment packages and application forms are now available from the school office.

National Cross Country Titles

Congratulations to Karlee Symonds for winning a Bronze medal last Friday at the state Cross Country event. We are all very proud of her and wish her the best at the National Titles which will be held in Launceston in August. Thank you to Mrs Coyte for her valuable and essential support for Karlee. Thank you to Karlee's family for all of their support to make this exciting opportunity available to Karlee.

Victoria Kennedy also competed at the State cross country and while she did not place in the medals, she did very well and we are also very proud of her and her effort.

Welcome back to Term 3

It was great to start the term with the Aboriginal Flag raising ceremony this morning. The students have returned wearing their uniforms and their smiles and look ready for another exciting term of learning and living together. A special welcome to our new students and their families.

A number of activities have been planned by our Aboriginal Education committee for celebrating NAIDOC this week which includes our assembly on Thursday morning.

A group of students will be participating in Southern Stars this term and we have also entered a number of items in the Shoalahven Eisteddfod.

We will celebrate education during Education Week with an assembly, open day and a family afternoon on Friday 2 August.

Thank you to staff for making these additional educational opportunities available to staff.

St John (NSW) Program to Aid Literacy

"Become a volunteer to support a child to improve their literacy, at our school.

-No experience is necessary.

-St John Ambulance (NSW) Community Services, will provide all necessary training

here at North Nowra Public School.

All prospective volunteers complete a four day Program to Aid Literacy (PALs™) course, which

equips them with the necessary skills and strategies to independently conduct a one hour of volunteering which can involve one on one, small group and/or in-class sessions with fun activities/reading/writing/spelling etc. to support literacy and develop a child's self-esteem. "

Once completed, it is expected that all volunteers would commit to a minimum of one hour

per week, on a day and time that suits both you and the school."

The cost of the training is $25 per person.

The proposed dates for training are Tuesdays: 19 November, 26 November, 3 Decmeber and 10 December. The training would take place from 9:30am to 2:30pm.

Multicultural Public Speaking

Athletics Carnival

The North Nowra Public School students were wearing green, red, yellow and blue to make sure that their teams Banksia, Waratah, Wattle and Bluegum were ready for a day of athletic competition. The team spirit and team songs were fantastic to start the day and set the tone for the day. Congratulations to all participants and to the winners. Our District Athletic Team will be announced shortly. Thank you Mrs Thomson and Mrs Kellert for organising this wonderful event!

Booderee Excursion Postponed.

Canteen closed Tuesdays

The canteen is not open on Tuesdays as there are currently not enough volunteers to help. Students need to bring food from home on Tuesdays. If you are able to volunteer at the canteen, please contact Tina in the canteen.

State Cross Country

Congratulations to Victoria Kennedy and Karlee Symonds who will be competing at the State Cross Country championships following their PB performances at the Regional Cross Country last week. Thank you to their fantastic support group which includes their mothers, Mrs Coyte and Abbey Bruton for helping them to achieve this result.

Responsibility – keep bag tidy

At school this looks like keeping your belongings in your bag, keeping your bag zipped up and in the correct place.

At home this might look like unpacking your notes, homework and lunch boxes in the afternoon.
